Sonya
Tayeh is a world famous dancer and choreographer, born in Brooklyn and raised in
Detroit. She is a guest judge and
choreographer on the Fox television series So You Think You Can Dance and
travels worldwide creating groundbreaking choreography for Broadway shows,
theatres, dance tours, and more.
Tayeh
joined the Jeff Buckley Music Family in the Summer of 2010 when she signed on to
choreograph The Last Goodbye, a
musical interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet featuring the music
and lyrics of Jeff Buckley, which ran in the 2010 season of the Williamstown
Theatre Festival in Massachusetts.
Commending her choreography design for The Last Goodbye, The New York Times writes, “…[Sonya Tayeh] has layered a spirited liveliness onto the music.”
“Rather
than classically choreographed numbers, I wanted to capture the visceral emotion
of not only the two young lovers and their warring, but also Jeff’s music,”
Tayeh explains. “It’s about
emotionally driven gestures that capture spirits trying to take flight.”
Tayeh’s
choreography will once again offer a new interpretation of Jeff’s haunting
lyrics with a crew of 18 dancers from her Los Angeles-based dance company
performing movements inspired by his music.
It’s all happening at the November 15th Los Angeles Jeff
Buckley Tribute at Largo. This is
an evening not to be missed!
