The San Francisco Chronicle features "33 Essential Debut Albums" this week. Among the featured offerings, Jeff Buckley's "Grace" is listed as one of the essentials, "with sweeping emotional anthems like 'So Real' and the blinding cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'.

Also featured are The Doors, Sex Pistols, Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, Patti Smith, MC5, Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", "The Who Sings My Generation", Led Zeppelin I and more. See the full list online at San Francisco Chronicle

KCRW Broadcast

In the early 90's, Jeff Buckley stopped by KCRW's studios late one night - well before he was famous - settling down in front of a microphone in Master Control right across from Liza Richardson. He sang a handful of songs, including a Bad Brains cover, an original track and a cover of Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit." There was no engineer on site. It was recorded on DAT.

At first we were only able to rescue one part of the session (see here) but, as luck would have it, engineer JC Swiatek discovered another copy of the recording in her own personal collection and now we can make the entire session available.

Check it out, and fall in love with Jeff Buckley all over again.

Light a Candle

It would be so great if everyone who lights a candle would also make May 29th the day they exercise their Golden Promise. Lighting candles and sharing how much we miss him are very comforting and inspiring, and the conscious act of doing something supremely humane is the best way for him to be remembered I can think of. Please, share that with us, too.

Bless you, all. MG

4. Jeff Buckley – Grace (1994)
Jeff Buckley may have only recorded one studio album in his tragically brief life (his posthumous sophomore effort, My Sweetheart the Drunk, wasn't quite finished by the time of death from drowning), but 1994's classic-rock masterpiece Grace managed to cement the angel-voiced rock god's legend status all on its own. With its startlingly powerful production from Andy Wallace, Grace is a revelation of studio recording—but it's all about that voice: a mind-blowing, hair-raising canon-blast of beauty and muscle, an otherworldly flame that flickered out far too soon. — Ryan Reed

In the APRIL 2012 issue of GUITAR WORLD (w/Edward Van Halen on the cover--on stands NOW), I (Dale Turner) wrote an article in my monthly HOLE NOTES Acoustic Guitar column on Jeff Buckley's chord voicings and acoustic playing. It's a full-page column and features musical examples in the style of "Lover, You Should've Come Over," "So Real," and "Last Goodbye." I was glad I got to do this!!

The atmospheric chordal stylings of the late, great Jeff Buckley
Jeff Buckley only released one full-length studio album, Grace (rel. 1994), in his lifetime, but in the 15 years since his passing (d. May 29, 1997), his influence endures, often cited as an inspiration by artists like Radiohead, Chris Cornell, Muse, Coldplay, and a host of newer acts.

While much has been said about this one-of-a-kind musician's cliché-eschewing songcraft and unparalleled vocal ability, his guitar playing rarely gets the attention it deserves. In this tribute lesson we'll take a close look at the inventive open-string voicings Jeff Buckley uses in the three Grace songs that feature acoustic guitar: "Lover, You Should've Come Over,” "So Real” and "Last Goodbye.”
-------------------
There is also a 20+-minute video lesson relating to the article, which I filmed/played on Guitar World's site:

David also talks about seeing Jeff perform. Read the full Q & A below and hear the album in streaming audio. The album also contains tributes to Hank Williams and Spaulding Gray.
